Gardaí rescue man from river Lee

Gardai in Cork have been praised after risking their own lives to save a man who got into difficulty in the River Lee in the city.

The alarm was raised at Lancaster Quay around 1 o’clock this afternoon.

A man was seen entering the river and was swept away in the fast flowing current.

A garda braved the ice cold river to render assistance and managed to keep the man above water.

A fire crew arrived and brought both men ashore.

The man who was rescued required hospital treatment.

Gardai said the quick thinking of passersby in contacting the emergency services also helped bring the situation under control
